Building a web gallery for my kimono collection

I started this project as a simple way to document my kimono and obi collection, but along the way, I realized I wanted to do more than just archive—I wanted to share the stories, emotions, and details that make each piece special. Initially, I considered using Publii, but it didn’t quite fit my needs. Since I was already familiar with Kirby and its flexibility, I decided to renew my license. It felt like the right move, allowing me to shape this archive in a way that truly reflects my vision.

Photographing kimono is an entirely different challenge than I expected. There’s something about how silk interacts with light that makes it unpredictable. Too much direct light, and the fabric loses its depth. Too little, and the details get lost. I spent last night adjusting my camera, trying to get the colors just right, balancing light and shadow until I felt I had something that truly represented the fabric. Each piece tells a different story. Some motifs feel alive—the flutter of a butterfly, the elegance of chrysanthemums, the quiet grace of cranes in flight.

Kimono aren’t like modern clothing with clear-cut seams and straightforward sizing, but they are easy to measure. I lay each one flat, smooth out any wrinkles, and use a flexible tape measure to document the dimensions accurately. It’s a slow process, but it feels right—like I’m honoring the garment by paying attention to every detail.

One of the most interesting parts of this project is watching it gradually come together. Right now, I’m taking photos, measurements, and notes on each kimono, figuring out how to present them in a way that feels natural. I hope that over time, it becomes more than just a collection—a place where others can appreciate these garments not just for their aesthetics, but for the history and craftsmanship behind them.

There’s still a lot of work to do, but every step forward makes this project feel more real. I’m looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.
